Fabric decides almost everything about how a piece feels and falls — the weight, the drape, how warm it is, how much it creases, and whether it needs lining. This guide covers every fabric EastEssence uses, so you can choose with confidence before you order. Every fabric here is opacity-tested for full coverage.

Every fabric, explained
Nida
The classic abaya fabric. Nida is a matte, finely textured crepe with a medium weight and a smooth, fluid drape. It hangs beautifully without clinging, holds a straight line, and resists creasing — which is why it works for both everyday wear and formal occasions.

Cotton
A natural, breathable choice for warm weather. Cotton has a soft matte surface with a little more body than crepe, so it holds a gentle shape rather than pooling. It is the most breathable fabric we use, but it does crease with wear — part of the character of a natural fibre.

Crepe
Crepe (including moss crepe and bubble crepe) has a lightly pebbled surface that catches the light softly. It is light to medium in weight with a beautiful flowing drape and strong wrinkle resistance, which makes it a favourite for occasion abayas and maxi dresses that need to look pressed all day.

Rayon
Rayon is a soft, breathable fibre made from plant cellulose, so it feels closer to a natural fabric than a synthetic. It is lightweight with a very fluid drape — lovely for relaxed everyday dresses and two-piece sets. Lighter rayons can be slightly translucent, so we line the pieces that need it; lining details are listed on each product page.

Jersey
Jersey is a soft knit with a little natural stretch. Cotton jersey is breathable and matte; it drapes close to the body without being tight, never creases, and doesn’t slip — which is also why it’s one of the most popular hijab fabrics. As an abaya or inner dress it is the easy, throw-on-and-go option.

Kashibo
Kashibo is a lightly textured fabric with real structure. It resists wrinkles almost completely and holds its shape, so pleats stay crisp and panelled designs keep their lines. It is a go-to for structured occasion pieces and coordinated sets where you want the silhouette to stay sharp.

Firdous
Firdous is a soft, matte fabric with a fluid hand, widely used for two-piece abaya sets. It has a similar elegance to nida with a slightly softer feel, drapes without clinging, and resists creasing — ideal when you want a coordinated shrug-and-inner or belted set that reads as one polished outfit.

Chiffon & Georgette
Both are very light, sheer woven fabrics with a floaty drape. Chiffon is the finer and more delicate of the two; georgette has a slightly grainier texture and a touch more weight, so it drapes a little more heavily. On their own they are semi-sheer, so they’re used as occasion overlays, layered pieces and scarves — the abayas and dresses that use them are lined.

How to choose
- Hot or humid climate? Cotton first, then rayon or crepe.
- Want it to look pressed all day? Nida, crepe, kashibo or firdous — all resist creasing.
- Everyday, low-effort wear? Jersey or nida.
- Eid or a formal occasion? Crepe or nida for a fluid look; kashibo if you want structure; chiffon or georgette layers for something dressier.
- Coordinated two-piece set? Firdous or kashibo.
